After a debut season back into the Championship saw Barnsley finish 14th, Paul Heckingbottom will look to use the summer transfer window to build on the success that they had this season.

Barnsley's relatively high finish is even more impressive considering the departures Heckingbottom has had to deal with both to Championship rivals and the Premier League.

With the summer transfer window just around the corner, the South Yorkshire side can look to build on the core of their squad and address some of the issues which have been revealed as the season has grown on.

Following the departure of young starlet James Bree to Aston Villa and impressive Ghanaian full-back Andy Yiadom being linked with a move to Premier League side Swansea City, Paul Heckingbottom may feel that he needs to bring in a right-back in the summer.

The arrival of a right-back could either be to replace the potentially outgoing Andy Yiadom or to provide healthy competition in the right-back role for the Ghanian defender.

In the lower leagues, one of the most highly-rated and highly-sought after defenders is Northern Irish international Conor McLaughlin.

After leaving Preston North-End and dropping down a division to join Fleetwood Town on a free transfer, the 25-year-old full-back has been a revelation for Uwe Rosler's side.

The impressive and consistent performances of the 25-year-old defender saw McLaughlin's efforts recognised as he was named in the EFL League One team of the season.

As well as Conor McLaughlin's performances attracting attention from the Championship, with McLaughlin's contract set to expire in the summer, it seems inevitable that McLaughlin will leave Fleetwood Town for the Championship.

Although Barnsley remains in the driving seat to secure McLaughlin's signature, Paul Heckingbottom should look to seal the deal quickly to ensure that they have the ideal replacement to fill the void left by James Bree.
