Following the news confirming that Marc Roberts was Birmingham City bound, it has become yet another transfer window in which Paul Heckingbottom is expected to rebuild the spine of the squad.
Impressively, despite losing a number of key individuals over the past twelve months, Barnsley have more than held their own in the Championship as they finished 14th in the Sky Bet Championship.
Already Paul Heckingbottom has brought in the highly rated 21-year-old centre half Liam Lindsay from Partick Thistle, having beaten Oxford United to his signature.
However, Heckingbottom may consider bringing in another centre half, either as cover or competition for new arrival Liam Lindsay and highly-rated centre back Angus MacDonald.
One player who could be of interest to Barnsley is Vegard Forren.
The Scandinavian centre half was released by Brighton & Hove Albion at the end of last season after joining Chris Hughton’s side after being released by Molde FK.
Despite winning a number of titles in his native country of Norway, there have always been question marks about the Norwegian centre-half and his difficulties in England.
With a point to prove and as an invaluable source of experience, the 29-year-old could be a shrewd move for Barnsley to make.
As a low-risk, low-cost option, a player of that experience and pedigree could be ideal for Barnsley as they look to go one step further than last season and break into the top half of the Championship or compete for the play-offs.
For Vegard Forren, the move could be the one to revitalise his career.
