Barnsley are reportedly set to appoint Wolfsberger AC boss Gerhard Struber as their new manager in the next few days.

The Tykes sacked manager Daniel Stendel back in October and have been led by caretaker boss Adam Murray since.

Under Murray's stewardship, Barnsley have picked up three draws and two losses meaning they remain bottom of the Championship.

The 38-year-old coach indicated he believed that the club would come to a decision over their new permanent manager during the international break.

It was reported last week that Barnsley had opened talks with Struber, who currently coaches Wolfsberger in the Austrian Bundesliga, and it appears those have been successful.

According to Kleine Zeitung, Struber will take charge at Oakwell over the next few days.

The report claims that the Austrian coach is ready to move to England and Wolfsberger already have a new coach in mind.

The 42-year-old began his coaching career with the Red Bull Salzburg youth sides before taking his first senior job at FC Liefering in 2017 and making the move to Wolfsberger in 2019.

Struber's side have made a strong start to the season, sitting third in the Austrian Bundesliga and still with a chance of qualifying for the knock-out stages of the Europa League.

It looks as if the Austrian's first game in charge could be a trip to Ewood Park to face Blackburn Rovers on Saturday.

The Verdict

After a pretty impressive start to Murray's tenure, Barnsley seemed to have run out of steam a bit and the comprehensive loss to Stoke City in the bottom-of-the-table clash last week indicated to me that a decision needs to be made over their permanent boss.

It now seems they've done that.

Struber has done a great job with Wolfsberger at the start of the season, so this looks like it could be a great appointment–as long as he can climatise to English football.

There will no doubt be concern about his lack of experience but something needs to change at the Yorkshire club and perhaps the Austrian is just the man to do it.
