Barnsley assistant head coach Christopher Stern has revealed that midfielder Alex Mowatt could make his return from injury against Birmingham City in the Championship tomorrow night.

The 26-year-old was a key player for Barnsley last season and started both of their opening two matches in the Championship this term, but was substituted during second half of the 2-0 defeat at Sheffield Wednesday with a muscle injury.

Mowatt has missed the past two matches for Barnsley - the 3-0 Carabao Cup defeat to Carlisle United last week and the 2-2 draw at Charlton Athletic in the Championship on Saturday - and it was thought that the midfielder could be out for a long time.

However, Barnsley assistant head coach Stern has revealed that Mowatt could make his return against Birmingham tomorrow night.

Stern was speaking to the media ahead of the Championship clash at St Andrew's and revealed that there is a chance Mowatt could make his return, but said the club will make a decision after training.

"He does have a chance to play tomorrow," said Stern, as quoted by the Yorkshire Evening Post.

"He is being assessed at the minute and we are going to see how he performs in training and how fit he feels and we are going to make a decision after training after all the opinions from medical staff and coaching staff."

Mowatt was an extremely important player for Barnsley last season, scoring eight goals and providing eight assists in 51 appearances in all competitions, as the Tykes won automatic promotion from League One.

Daniel Stendel's side are currently 14th in the Championship table after taking four points from their opening three league matches.

The Verdict

This is very encouraging news for Barnsley fans. Mowatt was magnificent in League One last season and he will no doubt have another important role to play in the Championship this term.

It was thought that Mowatt could be out for a long time, so news that he could potentially make his return against Birmingham tomorrow night will be a major boost for Barnsley.

Even if he misses the game tomorrow, this latest update from Stern suggests that he can't be far away from returning to action and that is very encouraging from a Barnsley perspective.
