Barnsley have confirmed that midfielder Romal Palmer has signed a new contract to remain at Oakwell until the summer of 2020.

The 20-year-old is yet to make his senior debut for Barnsley, but has impressed on a number of occasions for their under-23 side this season.

Palmer joined National League North side Darlington on loan during the second half of the campaign to experience first-team football.

The midfielder will link up with the first-team squad this summer and will be desperate to impress head coach Daniel Stendel in pre-season.

Barnsley finished second in the League One table this season, securing an immediate return to the Championship, in Stendel's first season in English football.

The German will be looking to strengthen his squad in the transfer market this summer, to build a team that can survive in the second tier next season.

The Verdict

This is great news for the player and encouraging news for Barnsley fans.

Barnsley obviously see Palmer as a player with a lot of potential and he could have a big future ahead of him at Oakwell.

All he can do now is focus on working hard and impressing Stendel in pre-season, in the hope that he is given a chance to prove himself for the first-team side in the future.
