Barnsley are eyeing a move for recently released stopper Adam Smith, according to HITC.

Smith started his career at Leicester City and, after a number of loan moves, made his name at Northampton Town. He's spent the last season with Bristol Rovers, but was released last week as Graham Coughlan begins a period of rebuilding.

The Tykes were recently linked with Exeter City's Christy Pym, a sure sign they're resigned to losing current stopper Adam Davies who is out of contract and free to depart Oakwell.

Smith made 10 appearances for the Gas this season, but only appeared once in 2019 as they beat Barnsley 2-1 on the final day.

He's previously been voted in the PFA Team of the Year for his heroics with Northampton as they were promoted from League Two in 2016.

It's thought Daniel Stendel may face competition for the keeper's signature though, with Forest Green Rovers also interested despite being knocked out of the play-offs by Tranmere earlier this week.

The Verdict

This is going to be a toss-up between regular football or playing understudy at a bigger club.

If he goes to Forest Green, he's the number one.

If he goes to Barnsley, he's playing second fiddle to whoever they bring in as a number one.
