Barnsley stormed into the Sky Bet Championship in 2016, surprising many by sitting just outside the play-offs around Christmas, and putting in some fine displays under Paul Heckingbottom’s guide.

However, the January transfer window proved to be a difficult time for Barnsley, as Sam Winnall, Conor Hourihane and James Bree all left Oakwell to explore other opportunities in the Championship, which led to the Tykes finishing mid-table.

Not one of those players have been properly replaced by Heckingbottom, but the Barnsley chief must be looking towards Brentford’s Maxime Colin to replace Bree this summer.

Colin’s future at Griffin Park is in doubt, with Brentford recruiting Henrik Dalsgaard recently, adding to the lengthy list of right-backs that Dean Smith has available to him.

The 25-year old made 40 appearances for the Bees during the 2016/17 season, scoring four goals and helping Smith’s side to finish in the top-half of the Championship table.

Since making the move to London from Anderlecht in 2015, Colin’s performances for Brentford have gone under the radar, with the right-back constantly impressing at Griffin Park.

Colin still has two-years remaining on his contract with Brentford, but could possibly cut a frustrated figure next season after the Bees’ activity in the transfer window so far.

Bree, 19, is a big loss for Barnsley, as his performances showed during the first-half of the season that he has the potential to develop into one of English football’s top full-backs.

However, should Barnsley move for a player of Colin’s quality, their fans might finally be able to start to forget the miserable January transfer window the Tykes endured.
