Newly promoted Barnsley are closing in on the signing of Conor Chaplin from Coventry City, CoventryLive have reported.

After seeing a £700,000 bid for the striker rejected earlier in the summer transfer window, The Tykes are thought to have made an improved offer to sign Chaplin, and it seems as though this one may have forced a breakthrough.

According to the report, Chaplin is due to undergo a medical and discuss personal terms with Barnsley on Thursday, ahead of a potential move to the Championship with Daniel Stendel's side.

Chaplin only joined Coventry from Portsmouth last summer - when Barnsley are also said to have had an interest in the striker - with the 22-year-old going onto score eight goals in 32 appearances in all competitions last season, helping the Sky Blues to an eighth-place finish on their return to the third tier of English football.

If confirmed, Chaplin will be Barnsley's tenth signing of the summer transfer window, following the likes of Mallik Wilks, Aapo Halme, and Luke Thomas - who was on loan at Coventry alongside Chaplin last season - in making the move to Oakwell.

The Verdict

This is a promising sign for Barnsley.

The Tykes have certainly been busy in the summer transfer window, and the fact that they are seemingly spending money to get that business done can only be a promising sign for their fans.

That they have many of these deals seem to be going through early in the window is another encouraging aspect to their activity this summer, as it gives the squad more time to gel before the start of the new campaign, when the pressure will be on to ensure they do not suffer a quick return to League One.

With that surely being the main target for next season, the number of options they are adding to their squad suggests they will have plenty to call upon when the going gets tough this season, and Chaplin's record suggests he is someone who could be capable of making a contribution between now and the end of the season.
