BBC Radio Sheffield reporter Jonathan Buchan has confirmed on Twitter that Barnsley have the option to extend winger Adam Hammill contract with the club by another year.

The confirmation comes straight from manager Paul Heckingbottom, who has been keen to tie the 29-year-old to a longer deal.

Hammill rejoined the club for a second spell in 2015, and Heckingbottom will hope to tie up a new deal for the player in the near future.

The Liverpool born wide man has shown great form since returning to Oakwell, scoring 7 times in 40 league appearances, and the option of tying him to an extended deal will come as a welcome boost to the Tykes, ahead of the visit of Aston Villa this weekend.

Barnsley lie in 15th place after their opening six fixtures, and knocked Derby County out of the Carabao Cup last night following a 3-2 win at Oakwell.

The Verdict: Tying Hammill to new terms should become a priority Heckingbottom, with the experienced wide man instrumental to his Barnsley outfit.

The winger has played in all six of Barnsley’s league fixtures this year, and has been sensational from the right side of midfield.

The one-time England U21 international will be keen to guide the Tykes up the Championship table following their indifferent start, beginning with the visit of Villa on Saturday.

Barnsley fans, how important is Hammill to your side?
