Barnsley defender Dimitre Cavare is close to completing a move to FC Sion, a report from Le10Sport has claimed.

Cavare has not made just one appearance for the Tykes since the appointment of Gerhard Struber as the club's new manager - in a 1-0 defeat at Middlesbrough at the end of November - with the Barnsley boss recently revealing that Cavare, along with teammates Mamadou Thiam and Dani Pinillos are not in his plans for the rest of the season.

Now, it seems as though Cavare could be handed an escape route from Barnsley, thanks to the late closure of the Swiss transfer window, which only shuts on the 17th February.

According to the latest reports, that could allow Cavare to make a move to Switzerland with FC Sion, with a deal expected to be completed sooner rather than later, after the club turned their attention to Cavare following the collapse of a move for Lamine Gassama from Turkish outfit Goztepe.

As things stand, Sion are currently eighth in the ten-team Swiss top-flight, seven points clear of the relegation places.

Cavare joined Barnsley from Rennes in the summer of 2017, and helped the Tykes secure promotion from League One at the first time of asking in the 2018/19 campaign, earning himself a place in the division's Team of the Year that season.

In total, Cavare has made 65 appearances in all competitions for Barnsley, scoring three times.

The Verdict

This looks like a good move for all parties.

With Struber seemingly having made his feelings clear about Cavare, it makes sense to allow him to leave the club, both to clear the wage budget slightly, and remove a possible distraction as the rest of the squad aim to secure Championship survival this season.

Add to that the fact that Cavare is out of contract at Oakwell in the summer, which means this could be Barnsley's last chance to receive a fee for the 22-year-old, and it does seem as though this transfer should have its benefits for the Tykes.

For Cavare as well, you imagine this is a deal he will be happy with, given it should give him the chance to enjoy regular first-team football once more, while getting him out of a situation you imagine he is not really enjoying at the minute.
