Barnsley are said to be rivalling Hull City to the potential signing of Dundee defender, Nathan Ralph who looks set to depart the club according to The Scottish Sun.

Ralph will officially become a free agent on June 1st when his current deal with Dundee expires.

The 26-year-old has been a rare bright spark in a relatively disappointing season with the Scottish side as they were relegated from the top-flight.

He picked up the Players player of the season award, as well as the Fans' Player of the Season, so it's clear to see that he is highly-rated at Dundee.

Ralph has only been with Dundee for one season, after making the move from Woking FC, who have recently been promoted to the Vanarama National League.

So the defender doesn't have any experience of playing in the Championship, but has made remarkable improvements this season, which has seen interest in his services rise.

He primarily operates at left-back, which is exactly what Hull are after, with Stephen Kingsley being the only recognised senior option at full-back for Nigel Adkins' side.

An interesting summer awaits, and it's certain to be a closely-fought battle for his signature in the coming weeks.

The Verdict:

He's more than capable of playing regularly in the Championship.

He hasn't had a chance to prove himself in the higher leagues of English football, but would be a useful player to have in either Daniel Stendel's or Nigel Adkins' side next season.

He's a player in demand, whose future certainly looks like it will be away from Dundee.
