Peterborough United director of football Barry Fry has suggested that Barnsley could be interested in signing midfielder Ryan Broom from Posh this summer.

Broom joined Peterborough back in the summer of 2020, joining from Cheltenham Town, who at the time were managed by the now-Barnsley manager Michael Duff.

Things however, have not worked out well for Broom at Peterborough. The midfielder has made just 18 appearances in all competitions for Posh since joining, scoring once.

Indeed, Broom has spent the last season-and-a-half out on loan in League One with Burton and Plymouth, and Peterborough announced in their retained list earlier this summer, that the 25-year-old has been transfer listed.

Now it seems as though Fry believes that Barnsley could be a potential next destination for the midfielder, after he apparently turned down a move to another League One club.

Speaking about the situation surrounding Broom's potential departure, Fry told the Peterborough Telegraph: "We did a great deal with a League One club for Ryan. There was a fee and some good add-ons, but he has so far refused to even speak to them.

"I have no idea what is in the mind of Ryan and his agents, although I have heard his old boss at Barnsley might be interested in him.”

As things stand, there is a year remaining on Broom's contract with Peterborough, securing his future at London Road until the end of next season.

Both Peterborough and Barnsley will be looking to bounce back next season, after suffering relegation from the Championship to League One during the 2021/22 campaign.

The Verdict

This could be one that is worth keeping an eye on over the course of the next few weeks.

Managers will often look to re-sign their former players for new clubs, since they are individuals they know, and who they can potentially get the best out of.

That could certainly make Broom an appealing candidate for Duff and Barnsley, especially considering the experience the 25-year-old already has at League One level.

Should that be the case, it would be intriguing to see how Fry and Peterborough respond to any bids, given both clubs may be targeting promotion from the third-tier in the coming campaign.
