Barnsley concluded their pre-season preparations with a 4-1 defeat to Premier League side, Sheffield United at the weekend.

Daniel Stendel's side were well beaten on the day, and will be hoping to put the result behind them ahead of the first game of the league season on Saturday.

Barnsley get their new season underway on Saturday with a tough test against Fulham, who are likely to be one of the favourites to win promotion, after making a number of additions to their squad.

But Stendel's side will fancy their chances of coming away from the game with a positive result, in what is going to be a fiercely-contested battle between the two sides at Oakwell.

The Tykes were hugely impressive in League One, and will be hoping that they can take that momentum from last year's campaign into the new season.

It's going to be a nervy season for supporters, who will be keen to see their side retain their place in the Championship for years, instead of becoming a 'yo-yo club' who can't settle in the second tier of English football.

The Verdict:

I think they could surprise a few teams this season.

There's no doubting that they'll be fighting for survival in the Championship, but they've already got some good players in their squad heading into the new league campaign.

Stendel will be keen to see his side build on the momentum they built in League One, and if they can do that, then they'll be a tricky side to come up against.
