Barnsley eyeing move for ex-Wolves and Derby man in search for Heckingbottom replacement

Barnsley are on the lookout for a new manager to replace Paul Heckingbottom, and could make a move for England under-20 manager Paul Simpson, according to Alan Nixon on Twitter.

The former Derby and Wolves midfielder has had a checkered career in management so far but has been with the international youngsters since 2017, and is highly regarded in some quarters.

However, it now appears it could be Barnsley who are the front runners for his signature, and they could even look to make a move in the coming weeks as they seek to sort out quick replacement for the now departed Paul Heckingbottom, who took the Leeds job last week.

Simpson has had spells in charge of Preston North End, Shrewsbury Town, and Stockport County, all with varying degrees of success, however he will no doubt see an opportunity with Barnsley as something he cannot pass up on if the Reds make their move.

Barnsley ground out a 1-1 draw with Sheffield Wednesday yesterday as they continue to fight against relegation in the Championship.

Tykes fans, what do you think? Would Simpson be a good appointment? Let us know in the comments!
