According to a reliable football journalist, Barnsley are trying to sign Matty Pearson.
Alan Nixon is reporting that Accrington Stanley defender Matty Pearson is a target for Barnsley as they eye a replacement for Andy Yiadom.
It is being widely reported that Andy Yiadom is on the verge of exiting Oakwell this summer.
Yiadom has rejected a new contract with Barnsley as he looks to force through a move to Premier League new boys Huddersfield Town.
When he inevitably leaves, Barnsley will need to fill that void at right back.
Another right back, James Bree, left Barnsley to join Aston Villa in January so the Tykes are very light in that department.
Matty Pearson has appealed to Paul Heckingbottom as a replacement.
The 23-year-old is able to play at right back or as a centre back, meaning he could fill in for Marc Roberts too (who left to join Birmingham City this summer).
With over 100 Football League appearances to his name so far (for Rochdale and Accrington Stanley), the former FC Halifax man has experience of lower league football and will be hungry to improve.
Also able to play in midfield, the former Blackburn Rovers trainee is a very versatile option for Barnsley to add to their squad.
Barnsley desperately need a new right back, especially if Yiadom leaves before the weekend.
Pearson is very much in the mould of Marc Roberts, who also played non-league football for Halifax before rising to the second tier.
If the 23-year-old can emulate Roberts’ success at Barnsley, then they have a future star on their hands.
While Pearson is a gamble at Championship level, I would trust Paul Heckingbottom’s judgement on transfers because he has a very good track record of bringing in these types of players.
