Barnsley are hoping to wrap up the signing of striker Mamadou Thiam soon, according to The Daily Mail.
Dijon attacker Mamadou Thiam is edging closer to securing a move to Championship club Barnsley.
Barnsley are hoping to snap up a new striker soon as they seek to bolster their goal scoring options ahead of the new season.
Last season’s striker Adam Armstrong was only on loan and he has since completed a move to Bolton Wanderers on another loan deal.
The Tykes still have Tom Bradshaw up front and have added Chelsea youngster Ike Ugbo on loan but another forward would help with their rotation.
Mamadou Thiam is a major target and Barnsley are confident about securing his services.
The reported deal would be roughly £900,000, according to this report.
Mamadou Thiam is currently at Dijon FCO, who finished 16th in Ligue 1 last year.
The Senegal under-20 international is able to play as a centre forward or as a winger and already has French top division experience under his belt.
With a handful of goals to his name for Dijon and during a loan spell at Clermont, the 22-year-old is now expected to complete his move to England, where he will join Paul Heckingbottom at Barnsley.
Ike Ugbo has looked good in pre-season and Tom Bradshaw is improving but it is clear that Barnsley still need another forward.
Whether Mamadou Thiam is the answer to their problems remains to be seen.
The Tykes probably should have targeted someone with a bit more experience and nous, rather than an unknown quantity, but if Thiam realises his potential, then they have a long-term solution to their striker problem.
