Barnsley are close to completing the signing of Kilmarnock striker Oli Shaw, according to journalist Andy Giddings.

The Scottish Sun first reported last week that the Tykes had agreed a fee with the Scottish Premiership outfit for Shaw and it now seems that his move to Oakwell is set to be finalised ahead of tonight's 11pm deadline.

Shaw has spent all of his career to date in Scotland, coming through the ranks with Hibernian and scoring 12 goals in 65 appearances during his time at Easter Road, before moving to Ross County in January 2020, where he scored 8 goals in 48 games.

The 24-year-old arrived at Kilmarnock last summer and he scored 16 goals in 35 games to help Derek McInnes' men secure promotion back to the Scottish top flight at the first time of asking.

However, he has found his game time much more limited this campaign, with his last start in the league coming back in early October, while he has been left out of the matchday squad altogether for Killie's last three league games.

He is yet to get on the scoresheet in the league this season, but has scored four goals in four games in the League Cup.

Barnsley currently sit sixth in the League One table, two points clear of seventh-placed Peterborough United and Shaw could become the latest addition of a busy window for the Reds after the signings of Max Watters, Barry Cotter, Bobby Thomas and Harry Isted.

The verdict

Shaw could be a good signing for Barnsley.

While he has struggled in the top flight this season, if he can recreate the form he showed in the Scottish Championship last campaign, then he could prove to be a shrewd addition.

At 24, he has plenty of room for development and under a manager in Michael Duff with a track record of getting the best out of his players, it would be no surprise to see him thrive.

With the additions of Watters and Shaw, the Tykes have significantly strengthened their attacking options and they look well placed to continue their push for an immediate Championship return.
