Barnsley are set to sign Kenneth Dougall from Sparta Rotterdam, according to reports.

Local journalist Andy Giddings reports that Barnsley are close to signing Dougall.

The 25-year-old plays predominantly as a holding midfield man but is also comfortable at centre-half, providing versatility for Barnsley's ranks.

The Tykes are hoping to bolster their squad this summer after suffering relegation from the Championship on the final day and now they are set for another campaign in League One.

Dougall could become their first senior signing of the summer transfer window.

The former Australia under-23 international started his career with his local team Brisbane City before a 2014 move to Telstar in Holland.

After a season with Telstar, he moved to another Dutch club in Sparta Rotterdam, helping them to win promotion to the Eredivisie in his first season with the club.

After two further years in the Eredivisie, he is now set to leave with Sparta Rotterdam suffering relegation back to the Eerste Divisie - the second tier of football in Netherlands.

The Verdict

If Dougall can adapt to English football, this could be a very good signing.

In Holland, he spent two years playing top flight football and so he would have come across some great players when taking on the likes of Ajax, PSV and Feyenoord.

At the right price, this could be a shrewd move for the Tykes.
