Barnsley claim JPT glory in thrilling Wembley finale

South Yorkshire’s Barnsley are the new Johnstones Paint trophy champions following a thrilling 3-2 win over Oxford United at Wembley Stadium.

The game was a fast paced affair, with Oxford having the better of the first half. They deservedly led at the break following a goal from Callum O’Dowda, sending fans of the League Two club into half time jubilant.

However, the second half was a different story, with Oxford seemingly willing to sit on their lead, Barnsley seized the initiative. The ever impressive Adam Hammil was becoming more and more involved, and it wasn’t long before the Tykes had their leveller through a Chey Dunkley own goal.

Barnsley continued to press, and on loan striker Ashley Fletcher soon fired them into the lead, before the brilliant Hammill made it 3-1 to almost put the game out of sight.

There was to be another twist though, as Danny Hylton headed in to make it a nervy last 15 minutes for Paul Heckingbottom’s men.

Barnsley though held on, even with 6 minutes of added time to get through, and claimed the trophy for the first time in their history.

It represents a remarkable turnaround this season for the Tykes, who sat bottom of the league for much of the campaign, before seeing a change in fortunes to climb the table.

Manager Lee Johnson then departed for Bristol City,  but caretaker Heckingbottom has managed to keep the same level of performance up, and they may well yet be back at Wembley for the play off final in 2 months time.
