Barnsley have taken Derby County striker Javaun Splatt on trial, with the teenage forward having featured for the club’s under-23s in a match against Sheffield Wednesday, according to Derbyshire Live.

Splatt is currently a second year scholar with Derby’s academy and has spent time out on loan with both Mickleover Sports and Carshalton Athletic, while he has also featured for the Rams’ under-23s on a few occasions, as he looks to continue his development and eventually break into the club’s first team.

The striker started for Barnsley up front in their game against Sheffield Wednesday’s under-23s, which ended in a 2-0 defeat, but the forward managed to play the opening hour of the match, before being replaced, as he looked to impress the Tykes enough to earn a potential deal with the club.

Splatt will be hoping to follow in the footsteps of Ali Omar, who recently signed for Barnsley after impressing during a trial with the club’s youth team following his departure from fellow Championship side Queens Park Rangers – and the Tykes could potentially pull off a similar move if they have been impressed enough by the striker.

The verdict

Barnsley are a club that have been very used to developing and nurturing young and talented players over recent years, with the Tykes not having the financial power of a lot of clubs in the Championship, which means that they are required to develop players, rather than consistently going out to sign the finished article.

A move for a player like Splatt would seem to be entirely within the club’s model and how they go about trying to bring in and develop promising talents, with the aim of them eventually making the breakthrough into their first team set up.

It will be interesting to see whether the teenage forward managed to impress enough during his trial for the club’s under-23s to make Barnsley pursue a permanent move for him, and they could potentially help him to develop into a reliable first team performer over the next few seasons.

The Tykes are likely to be able to offer players like Splatt more first team minutes than a lot of other Championship clubs, which makes them a more attractive proposition than most clubs for youth players, and Splatt could potentially become the latest player to be signed at developed by the Yorkshire club.
