Having spent much of the season battling it out for an automatic promotion spot in League One, Championship bound Barnsley and play-off contender Sunderland are now set to battle it out again, this time for the services of AFC Wimbledon defender Deji Oshilaja.

The defender has made 80 appearances for The Dons since joining from Cardiff two seasons ago, having previously been on loan from the Welsh side during the 2014/15 season.

Oshilaja hasn't featured for Wimbledon since February due to injury, but that hasn't reduced the interest in the club's captain.

According to HITC, both Barnsley and Sunderland, as well as fellow League One side Fleetwood Town, are all interested in the defender, who Wimbledon have previously rejected bids for both last summer and in the January transfer window.

Wimbledon may find it harder to keep hold of the 25-year-old in the coming transfer window however, with his contract at Kingsmeadow set to expire at the end of the season.

The Verdict

This seems a strange one to me.

You can understand teams wanting to add options, but Wimbledon's great escape this year came after Oshilaja was ruled out through injury, having struggled in the relegation zone for all of the early part of the campaign.

This therefore seems like something of a risk, particularly given one and maybe two of the sides said to be interested could be playing Championship football next season.
