Barnsley and Rotherham go head-to-head in battle to sign Wales international

Fulham attacker George Williams is on the radar of both Barnsley and Rotherham United this summer, according to HITC Sport.

Williams will become available on a free transfer this summer unless Premier League bound Fulham renew his contract.

With Fulham heading to the top flight, it is unlikely that they will retain Williams, alerting the likes of Barnsley and Rotherham to his availability.

The 7-cap Wales international joined the Cottagers in 2012 after coming through the academy at his hometown club Milton Keynes Dons.

But he has only managed 17 appearances in total for the West London outfit with no goals to his name.

After two loan spells back in Milton Keynes and further temporary stints away at Gillingham and St Johnstone, it looks like the 22-year-old could be set for a new permanent club this summer.

In an injury-blighted loan spell at St Johnstone recently, he made 11 appearances for the Scottish club but his route to the first-team at Craven Cottage looks blocked.

Williams’ situation has caught the interest of a number of teams in England and Scotland but Barnsley and Rotherham appear to be the favourites.

The Verdict

Barnsley were recently relegated to League One and are eyeing the young forward, who can also play in midfield, to fire them back to the second tier while Rotherham are looking to strengthen after winning promotion.

His versatility and youth make him an attractive prospect, although he still has a lot to prove.

A move away from Fulham makes sense for his career and given his young age, he is definitely worth a gamble for either the Tykes or the Millers.
