Former Blackburn Rovers striker Jon Stead is a target for League One clubs Barnsley and Chesterfield, according to FLW sources.

Stead to Notts County?
FLW understands Stead is a target for a number of League One clubs

The 32-year-old is a free agent having been released from his contract at hometown club Huddersfield Town at the end of last season and FLW understands Barnsley and Chesterfield are among many League One clubs who have the talisman in their sights.

Stead has played Premier League football in his career at both Blackburn Rovers and at Sunderland but has forged a career mainly in Championship and League One level.

Last season during a loan spell with Bradford he netted six goals in 32 appearances for the club.

He was among the scorers when the Bantams rocked the football world by knocking Chelsea out of the FA Cup when they won 4-2 at Stamford Bridge. Stead also set another two of the goals up.

Stead is now looking for a club having been deemed surplus to requirements by Huddersfield.

Dean Saunders is desperately looking to add to his depleted squad following a series of high-profile departures at Chesterfield this summer, and Lee Johnson of Barnsley is also targeting a striker who knows where the back of the net is, as he plots a tilt at promotion.
