Barnsley can look forward to a promotion party against Bristol Rovers on Saturday after their Championship return was confirmed on Tuesday night.

Promotion rivals Portsmouth and Sunderland slipped up against Peterborough and Fleetwood respectively, which enabled Daniel Stendel's side to start the celebrations despite not even playing.

Stendel has impressed during his first season in charge, with his Tykes' side also in with a chance of challenging for the League One title on Saturday as they sit level on points with leaders Luton Town.

Barnsley have been particularly impressive on the defensive front this season, having conceded the fewest number of goals in the league (37).

They have also achieved some of this success without one key figure, who is responsible for shielding the defence when on the pitch.

Kenny Dougall has featured 27 times for Barnsley this season, starting many of those matches at the base of midfield, but his season has been hampered by two lengthy injury lay-offs.

The 25-year-old suffered a broken leg against Doncaster in March and ended his campaign, even though he attempted to continue afterwards.

He has not been available for the Tykes' final run-in, where they have won their last four matches, but he has now provided reassurances that he is focused on getting fit ahead of the Championship.

"It's a great league and I'm really looking forward to testing myself in it," he told the club website.

"A lot of the boys will be on holiday which is understandable after a tough season, but my priority is to get fit and get ready to go for the start of next season."

Dougall joined Barnsley from Sparta Rotterdam last summer, and he has one year to run on his initial contract with an option of a third year.

The Verdict

It will be a race against time for Dougall to get fit for the start of the season, but his optimism here suggests he is looking forward to the challenge.

Dougall's playing style would be suited to the Championship, so Tykes fans should hope he steps up his recovery over the coming months to make it fit for the opening match in August.
