Managerless Sunderland will be hoping to end their six-match winless run in all competitions when they take on Wigan Athletic at the Stadium of Light on Saturday.

The Stadium of Light outfit sacked Phil Parkinson last Sunday following their draw at Fleetwood two days earlier, although his departure didn't bring an upturn in the Black Cats' League One results after they were held by Burton Albion in midweek.

Despite their recent slump, with the sides around them slipping up on a weekly basis, Sunderland remain just the one point outside the play-offs, and five adrift of the automatic promotion places.

But having scored 18 times in their 14 League One matches, which is the fewest in the top-eight, Sunderland have been lacking a spark this season, although that could change when they host the struggling Latics tomorrow afternoon.

That's because earlier on Friday, Sunderland's official Twitter account posted a short video of Aiden McGeady, followed by the eyes emoji - suggesting that the Irish attacker could be about to return to the squad against Wigan.

McGeady was frozen out by Phil Parkinson, and has been turning out for the club's Under-23s in recent weeks - with his last appearance for the Black Cats coming more than 12 months ago, but with Parkinson now gone, it appears that he might be given another chance.
