Reading have had a rather quiet summer, even though they have made six signings.

Paul Clement has been going about his business at the Madejski in unassuming fashion.

Making half a dozen signings shows the club have had a busy summer, but none are what you would call marquee or emphatic.

The most adventurous is Marc McNulty’s capture from Coventry City, with Darren Sidoel a signing out of left-field, completing a move from Ajax’s reserves.

Of the remaining new-comers, they are all safe, experienced signings and ones intended to increase competition.

You could say the new additions reflect the manager in being conservative by nature.

Reading start their season off with a home fixture against Frank Lampard’s exciting new Derby side.

Having made a plethora of signings, the Royal’s still lack some depth from and will need to add more before next week’s kick-off if they are to improve on their poor finish last term.

With the season only one week away, and Reading still looking light in some areas, here are two players manager Clement should sign now and start in next week’s season curtain raiser at home to Derby County.

Reading have been linked with the Brighton man and they need to bring him in fast.

He has a proven track recored at scoring at Championship level, and has recently acquired more Premier League experience.

Baldock is desperate for first-team football having played only 30 minutes over five appearances last term for the south coast side.

Modou Barrow was the Royal’s stop scorer last year with ten goals, and he plays in a wide position.

McNulty will have all the pressure loaded upon his shoulders, Baldock signing would alleviate that.

Reignite the interest and get him in as soon as possible to be ready for the Ram raid next Friday. The Aston Villa man had a torrid time at the Madejski during his second apperance and home debut against Millwall, the defender injured his knee half an hour into proceedings and was out for six weeks.

Elphick made his return on the final day of the season and missed out on vital first-team football during his time at the Royals.

He is a consummate professional and a player that would have played a bit part in helping Reading finish higher up the table last year.

With Villa under new ownership and money worries disbanded, Elphick might be surplus to requirements.

The 30-year-old defender has unfinished business at the Madejski Stadium and Clement should snap the former loanee up.
