Reading look set to be dealt a blow in the transfer market, with Chelsea youngster Ethan Ampadu set to seal a move to RB Leipzig.

The Welsh international was thought to be interesting the Royals this summer, but according to the Guardian, Ampadu is now set to complete a move to Germany as he continues his football development away from Stamford Bridge.

Ampadu's move will no doubt come as a bitter disappointment to Reading, who were hoping to pull off a major coup in adding the young star to their ranks over the summer.

However, the teenager midfielder, who can also slot in at centre-back if needed, will now look to impress over the in the Bundesliga with big spending Leipzig, who have made quite the splash in the German game in recent seasons.

Ampadu was given a few chances last season under Maurizio Sarri but with the Italian now gone, it would appear new manager Frank Lampard has taken the decision to grant the Chelsea youngster a move away from the club in order to maximise his potential and development.

Lampard has already given the likes of Mason Mount a new contract for the Blues, and Ampadu will no doubt be confident of having long-term success under Lampard's tenure in London.

The Verdict

Smart move from Chelsea this, but it is a bitter blow to Reading really.

Ampadu would have been superb in the Championship, much like Reece James was for Wigan last season.

However, how do you turn down a move to Leipzig? A club who have made a habit in recent times of giving young players a chance to develop and shine on the biggest stage.

Reading will move on, and will no doubt be casting an envious eye over Ampadu and Leipzig as the season progresses.
