Millwall’s chances of re-signing Jayson Molumby were ended last night after the Brighton midfielder secured a loan move to Championship rivals Preston until the end of the season.
Molumby made 40 appearances during a highly successful season-long loan spell at The Den last season, helping the Lions earn an eight-place finish.
And on Monday morning, the South London Press revealed that Gary Rowett’s men were pushing hard to bring the Republic of Ireland international back to SE16 – although this time on a permanent deal which would’ve been a record-transfer, but the bid was turned down by Brighton.
Can you name each of these 17 ex-Millwall players just by looking at these 3 clues?
With the Seagulls clearly keen on keeping Molumby, they then allowed the midfielder to join Preston on loan for the remainder of the campaign after featuring just three times at The Amex this term – making only one Premier League appearance.
Following his spell with Rowett’s side, Millwall would’ve been favourites to capture the 21-year-old, but it appears that the Lions were only interested in a permanent deal, and therefore Alex Neil’s Preston swooped in.
Here’s how the Millwall faithful reacted on Twitter to missing out on Molumby’s signature:
Gutted molumby has signed for Preston! Sounds as though Rowett wants permanent signings, hopefully he has some great signings coming in, that can make up for this🦁🦁🦁

Would have liked Molumby but not the end of the world. Permanent or nothing for me, can't stand loans.

People either have very short memories or just haven’t been going Millwall long enough. Molumby was no where near in the same category for us as Woods, Puncheon or Kane. A bit of calm is needed

Disappointed to see Molumby join PNE on loan but part for me thinks second season loans don't always work out for us. I know there a few exceptions! #millwall

I’d have loved to get Molumby back in a #Millwall shirt. Ultimately I think this is the better move – if Brighton won’t sell him, either now or after season, getting him on loan doesn’t help enough. Use that “record fee” money on another midfielder we can sign permanently.

Can’t believe we didn’t get Molumby 😭

All of those talking about Jayson Molumby like he is the second coming of Christ. If we sign him permanently I’d welcome him back but I strongly believe we have a ready made replacement in the middle when Billy Mitchell is fit. Billy has it all, just needs to be played.

Good luck to the lad, he gave his all in a Wall shirt. Time for us to move on and look at other creative midfield options. We are not creating enough chances, that needs to change otherwise we are in a dog fight for the rest of the season.

Not what we needed anyway. Use that money willing to spend on him for an attacking midfielder

Awful from us
