With news of a possible transfer embargo and a lack of new faces coming into the club, it was never going to be a fairy tale start for Jos Luhukay's side yesterday.

A 3-2 defeat at promoted Wigan ensured they returned from the north west with no points, as well as a suspension for Atdhe Nuhiu who was sent off in the last minute of the game

The margin of defeat was narrow, although Owls' fans won't take that as any comfort at all. Last season, Wigan were a League One side and Wednesday had been in the play offs for consecutive seasons.

The post mortem began in earnest and whilst little can be gleaned from a single game, the warning signs are there that this may be a long season for the blue half of Sheffield.

One fan appealed for calm and perspective, but elsewhere the response was damning with players, officials and the manager singled out for criticism across social media.

No trophies are won and lost on the opening day, but perhaps yesterday there was a little bit of hope, belief and respect lost by the manager and his players.

Here's some of the fans' responses from twitter.
