Derby supporters have been suggesting that Jason Knight has the potential to develop into a really crucial player for the Rams following the midfielder’s performance in the 2-1 win against Barnsley.

Knight has been handed a chance to really establish himself in the starting line-up over the last two matches, with the 18-year-old starting and scoring both goals for Derby in their win against Charlton Athletic, and again producing another promising performance against Tykes.

The teenager was moved out to the left-hand side by Cocu against Barnsley, with the Dutchman bringing Wayne Rooney into the midfield for his debut for the club, and Knight delivered an effective performance out wide helping the Rams cause problems for their visitor’s defence throughout the contest.

Given the impact Rooney made in midfield alongside both Max Bird and Duane Holmes, it could leave Knight having to compete for starts out wide over the coming weeks, rather than in his more natural central midfield role, but he has proven to Cocu that he has the qualities needed to be a useful option in the wide positions.

Most Derby supporters believe that Knight has certainly taken his chance over the last two matches, and that he deserves to be given the chance to really cement his place in the Rams’ starting line-up over the second half of the campaign, as Cocu looks to develop some of the club’s most promising academy players.
