Saturday’s game at Fratton Park could be do or die for Portsmouth boss Kenny Jackett.

After suffering a 4-0 hiding from Southampton in the South Coast derby in midweek, Pompey face a visit from Bolton on Saturday knowing that a loss could see them drop down into the relegation zone.

Jackett’s side have had a really disappointing start the 2019/20 campaign. Pompey are currently 20th in League One and, despite having a few games in hand, are 10 points away from the top six already.

They welcome a Bolton side who will likely be high in confidence after their one-all draw with Sunderland last weekend.

The Trotters are rock bottom of the table due to a 12-point deduction but after avoiding EFL expulsion look to be showing signs of improvement.

Even so, this is the sort of game Pompey should be winning comfortably and failing to do so on Saturday could be the final nail in the coffin for Jackett.

With that in mind, here is how we think he should line up his team for the visit of Bolton tomorrow.

Craig MacGillivray has been ever-present between the sticks for Pompey this season and that is unlikely to change against Bolton. A 4-0 scoreline never reflects well on a goalkeeper but the 26-year-old made some good saves against the Saints.

Ahead of him, the conversion of Oil Hawkins from striker to centre-back had looked to be going well but he has suffered a foot injury that looks to keep him out for four to six weeks. In his absence, Paul Downing will likely be recalled to the side to partner Christian Burgess at centre-back.

Outside them, I back Jackett to go with Anton Wakes and Lee Brown at full-back.

Tom Naylor recovered from injury in time to make the side against the Saints and though that didn’t impact the result, having the captain available is a huge bonus. He looks set to line up in holding midfield alongside Ben Close.

Marcus Harness has been missing for the past five games due to injury but Jackett has suggested he could return on Saturday, which will be a huge boost for Pompey. The return of both Harness and Ellis Harrison provides the 57-year-old coach with something of a selection dilemma.

Ryan Williams was very impressive against Southampton and I back him to start on the left with Andrew Cannon through the middle and Ronan Curtis, who has caught flak from fans for recent performances, dropping to the bench.

John Marquis has not found his shooting boots for the South Coast club, scoring once in seven league games, but with his record in the division, it can only be a matter of time, surely. A start against a Bolton side that have conceded 24 goals this season should be a great opportunity to get going.
