Derby County endured a disappointing season last year, and missed out on the Play-Off spots by a massive 13 points after inconsistent spells limited the Rams to a 9th place finish.

Boss Gary Rowett will take charge of his first transfer window at the club with great expectations placed upon him, and has already begun to appease Rams fans with the solid acquisitions of Andre Wisdom and Curtis Davies to shore up his defensive unit.

With George Thorne only just emerging from a long spell on the sidelines, Rowett may also consider a move for a defensive midfield option, as the former Birmingham manager cannot rely too heavily on a player with so many injury issues to be available on a regular basis.

With that in mind, a swoop for free agent Joe Ledley could be on the cards, with the Welshman free to talk to other clubs after his contract at Crystal Palace was not renewed.

Ledley would be a real coup if Rowett can pull a deal off, and can contribute in both defensive and attack-minded roles.

The 30-year-old boasts a wealth of experience, and with a mammoth 73 international caps to his name, would add an undeniable new edge to the middle of the field at Pride Park.

Derby need someone to come in for Will Hughes, who departed for Watford, and to provide support to the recovering Thorne, and with Ledley’s versatility and ability to adopt both the deep lying and advanced playmaker roles, he would be a huge addition to Derby’s expected top six push next season.
