Aston Villa are still waiting to discover their promotion fate as they gear up for the Championship play-off final at Wembley on Monday afternoon.

Dean Smith's side saw off West Brom in the semi-finals and will now face Derby County in the capital, with the winner sealing their place in the Premier League next season.

Villa's play-off success has put any potential transfer business on hold, with the club set to draw up their list of targets when it becomes clear which division they will be playing in next season.

However, this has not stopped the Villa Park outfit from being linked with a deal for Newcastle United midfielder Isaac Hayden, according to the Chronicle.

It is understood that Smith will make a move for the 24-year-old if his Villa side gain promotion, but they could face competition for his signature with West Ham and Brighton also interested.

The report also states Newcastle will demand over £15million for the ex-Arsenal man who made 28 appearances for the Magpies last term.

The Verdict

Hayden would be a solid signing for a newly-promoted side such as Villa.

He is an accomplished Premier League midfielder, but Villa must be careful they do not pay over the odds for him.

Newcastle will not want to let him go on the cheap, and I think Villa should re-consider the deal if the price starts to approach £20million.
