Aston Villa were deservedly celebrating jubilantly on Tuesday night when Tammy Abraham's spot-kick confirmed their place at Wembley for the Championship play-off final.

Despite losing on the night, Dean Smith's spirited men found their bottle from the spot whilst West Brom completely lost their's, meaning they will face Derby County in just over a week's time for a place in the Premier League.

Confidence will never have been higher at Villa Park since the club were relegated from the Premier League and they go into their clash with the Rams as favourites.

But they would be wise to look back to a certain clash last season as they prepare for their biggest match of the season.

On January 6, 2018, Peterborough United arrived at Villa Park for the third-round of the FA Cup.

It was a match that Steve Bruce's side were clearly confident of winning with the likes of Jack Grealish and Ahmed Elmohamady dropped to the bench.

But the starting XI was still strong, with the likes of Conor Hourihane, John Terry, Jed Steer and Neil Taylor all starting - as three of the four still do.

What followed was a classic 'cupset'.

Keinan Davis gave Bruce's side a first-half lead and it looked like a comfortable victory would follow.

But in the last 15 minutes, the Posh scored three times to kill off the game and win 3-1 with Grealish and Henri Lansbury having very little impact from the bench.

The main protagonist in the defeat? Jack Marriott, who signed for Derby just six months later.

He is somebody who simply thrives in a knockout scenario. Goals against Manchester United and Chelsea in the League Cup earlier in the campaign set the tone before he netted a further two at Elland Road on Tuesday to break Leeds hearts.

In fact, over the course of the last two seasons he has scored 10 goals in 16 matches of knockout football.

Admittedly, he is yet to trouble Villa in 180 minutes of Championship football so far this season but it would be utterly foolish of Dean Smith's men to get complacent.

Marriott is the man for the big occasion and the man for knockout football, and knockout games do not get much bigger than the Championship play-off final.

Villa have seen it first hand before and will need to ensure they are not on the end of it again.
