Newly-promoted Aston Villa are interested in signing Real Vallodolid midfielder Ruben Alcaraz, according to reports from Spanish media outlet Marca.

The 28-year-old has caught the eye in La Liga this season, making 35 appearances and becoming an ever-present for Vallodolid.

The Spaniard was a standout performer for the Spanish side this season and played an integral role in their escape from the drop in La Liga, helping them acheive a 16th placed finish.

Now, a host of clubs are believed to be tracking the 28-year-old's signature ahead of the summer, with Marca claiming that Aston Villa and Getafe are interested in signing the versatile midfielder.

Villa will be looking to get rid of the deadwood in the summer, as they prepare for life in the Premier League after beating Derby County in the Sky Bet Championship play-off final.

The likes of Glenn Whelan and Mile Jedinak all face uncertain futures at Villa Park with their deals set to run out in the summer, and Alcaraz could be seen as an ideal replacement.

The Verdict

On paper, Alcaraz certainly looks to be a good player, and having played in La Liga for a lengthy amount of time, he's bound to be good on the ball which would makes him a perfect Dean Smith player.

He's entering his prime years, so if he can adjust to the Premier League, then there is no reason to suggest why he can't be a good signing.

They definitely need some new players in that area of the pitch, so it could be a positive start to the summer for the Villans.
