Reports from Leicestershire Live are suggesting that Aston Villa are seriously considering a move for Premier League winning centre back Robert Huth.

The defender left the King Power Stadium in May after a three-year spell with the Foxes, during which he lifted the biggest prize in domestic football for a third time.

Last season he failed to make a single top-flight appearance in an injury-hit season, instead appearing for the U21 side as they lost 4-2 to Oldham in the Checkatrade Trophy. That's prompted him to look elsewhere for his football.

The German, who has the most ever Premier League appearances for a player of his nationality, is considered to be the perfect replacement for outgoing defender John Terry.

The report suggested 33-year old Huth would be willing to take a pay cut, something that could make him more attractive to cash-strapped Villa.

Huth began his career at Chelsea and later had spells with Stoke and Middlesbrough before moving to Leicester City in 2015. As well as his Leicester City medal, he has two Premier League wins with Chelsea and appeared in Stoke City's FA Cup losing team of 2011.

The Verdict

Huth is vastly experienced, but a move to Villa would represent a big risk on their part.

He barely kicked a ball in anger last season and by the time the opening weeks of the season are out of the way, he'll be 34-years old.

It would be a surprising move if they got caught with an aging centre back again, so soon after being lumbered with John Terry.
