Aston Villa are looking to sign Brentford defender Yoann Barbet in January, according to reports from Birmingham Live.

The 25-year-old is, of course, no stranger to Villa boss Dean Smith, having been a regular under the 47-year-old during his time at Griffin Park, before the latter departed for Villa in October.

The defender has made over 100 appearances for the Bees since his arrival from French outfit Niort in 2015, but is out of contract at the West London club in the summer, with his former manager looking to pounce.

Villa's Achilles heel this season has been their defence - they have conceded 37 goals in 24 Championship games this season, which is considerably more than their promotion rivals, so defensive reinforcements are a must in January.

Natural right-back James Bree was played at centre-half against Swansea City on Boxing Day due to the absence of Axel Tuanzebe through injury, showing that Smith's men really do need some depth in the back-four.

The Villans currently sit ninth in the Sky Bet Championship table, ahead of an away clash with Preston North End this weekend.

The Verdict

Barbet would be an excellent signing for Villa.

It's no secret that Smith wants to bring in another centre-half or two in January, so why not bring in someone that he knows like the back of his hands?

Barbet can play centrally or on the left of defence, so would certainly bring a double boost to Villa's problem area.
