Brentford defender and reported Aston Villa transfer target Yoann Barbet has spoken out about rumours linking him with a move to Villa Park in January, after speaking to West London Sport.

The central defender has been a standout performer at the back for the Bees, making over 100 appearances for the West London club since his arrival from Niort in 2015.

The Frenchman is, of course, no stranger to former Brentford manager and current Villa boss Dean Smith - the 25-year-old was a regular figure for the 47-year-old during his time at Griffin Park.

With Villa desperate for defensive reinforcements, having conceded 40 goals in the league this season, there was speculation instantly linking him with a switch to the West Midlands.

And after speaking about the link with the Villans, Barbet remained flattered after being linked with the play-off contenders.

"I'm out-of-contract so maybe that is why they talk about Villa. The manager was here, they need defenders, I can play both (left-back and centre-back),"

“When you hear a big team want you or will try to sign you it makes you feel you’re a good player."

Villa have already moved to address their defensive frailties with the recent signing of Wolves defender Kortney Hause - the 23-year old arrives at Villa Park on an initial loan deal, that can be made permanent at the end of the season should they choose to.

Vila currently sit 10th in the Sky Bet Championship table after just one win in their last six league games.

The Verdict

What a signing Barbet would be for Villa.

He's relatively young, and has proven himself to be a quality player at Championship level.

Villa fans can feel very excited after his recent claim.
