Former West Ham United defender James Collins is still training with Championship side Ipswich Town despite interest from Aston Villa, according to reports from the Ipswich Star.

The 35-year-old has been training with Paul Hurst’s men for over a week, but is said to be delaying signing a permanent deal with the Tractorboys in hope of Villa's interest intensifying.

Steve Bruce is reportedly extremely keen on the former West Ham centre-half, who spent seven years with the London club, with Villa's number one target John Terry closing in on a move to Russian side, Spartak Moscow.

After the 1-1 draw with local rivals Norwich earlier this month, Ipswich boss Hurst said: “We spoke to him (Collins) last week and are due to have another conversation. I wouldn’t particularly rule it out.

“It’s certainly not a case of him just coming in to sign paperwork, but it’s something we will look at."

The Verdict

After their 4-1 thumping at Sheffield United last week, it’s clear Villa need new, experienced heads in their defence.

Collins can easily still do a job and would be a shrewd signing for Villa, who don't look like they'll be signing Terry.

However, for Ipswich, they also need experienced bodies to bolster an inexperienced looking squad, who are struggling at this early stage.

If Ipswich can get Collins on board it'll feel like a major coup.
