Aston Villa are set to recall Jordan Lyden from his loan spell with Oldham Athletic, with the Championship giants considering offering the midfielder new terms at Villa Park.

Lyden has been impressing at League Two outfit Oldham this season, managing to make 14 appearances for the Latics across all competitions.

The latest of those came yesterday in the FA Cup, as Oldham sprung a surprise on Fulham, beating the Premier League side 2-1 at Craven Cottage.

Now, according to reliable journalist Alan Nixon, Villa are looking to recall Lyden to take a look at the 22-year-old’s progress as they consider offering him a new deal at Villa Park.

In his senior career, Lyden has managed only seven appearances in claret and blue, with the latest of those coming back in September 2017, when Steve Bruce handed the midfielder just under half-an-hour of a League Cup defeat to Middlesbrough.

However, Dean Smith is now in-charge at Villa Park, with the former Brentford boss having an emphasis on promoting young players.

Callum O’Hare, James Bree and Keinan Davis were all involved on Saturday afternoon as Villa crashed out of the FA Cup at the hands of Swansea City.

The Verdict

Lyden has been impressing with Oldham and his efforts against Fulham yesterday will not have gone unnoticed.

Whether he’s good enough to influence Villa’s first-team right now is up for debate, but the club and Smith are clearly happy with what he’s been doing out on loan.

Where his career goes from here is going to be interesting to watch.
