Aston Villa are considering a move for Michael Hefele this summer, as Steve Bruce continues to look for John Terry’s replacement ahead of next season.

It was announced that Terry, last season’s captain, would be leaving Villa Park after Villa failed to secure promotion back to the Premier League.

According to the Mirror’s live transfer blog (20/06, 09:17), Hefele is on Bruce’s radar, with Villa considering a move for the centre-back, who has just one year left on his deal at Huddersfield Town.

Hefele has been with the West Yorkshire outfit over the last two years, helping Huddersfield to promotion and to then establish themselves in the Premier League.

The 27-year-old made 42 appearances across all competitions for the Terriers during the 2016/17 campaign, scoring five goals and helping David Wagner’s side surprise everyone by winning promotion via the play-offs.

However, Villa are looking to secure a cut-price deal with Huddersfield for Hefele, after the defender found his opportunities limited in the Premier League last season.

Hefele made six appearances across all competitions, with just two of those coming in the Premier League.

The Verdict

This is an ambitious move from Villa, as in the Championship, Hefele proved to be an extremely good centre-back.

Things haven’t worked out for the German in the Premier League, but taking a look at his last stint in the Championship, it is easy to see why Villa are interested.

Terry leaving has put Villa in a difficult situation, with Steve Bruce needing to get defenders on board this summer.

Targeting someone like Hefele will please Villa’s supporters.
