Aston Villa are still hopeful of bringing Brentford's Neal Maupay to the club - as they close in on a deal for his Bees teammate Ezri Konsa.

The talented England U21 centre-back is having a medical ahead of a move to the west Midlands. And, according to reporter Graeme Bailey, there could be another deal between the two clubs concluded in this summer window, with Dean Smith keen on working with Maupay once again.

"Aston Villa are closing in on deal for Brentford central defender Ezri Konsa - beating a few clubs including Fulham. They are also still interested in Neal Maupay - with Brentford closing on his replacement Sam Gallagher of Southampton."

The Frenchman arrived at Griffin Park when Smith was in charge and has established himself as one of the best number nines outside the Premier League in the past two years.

Maupay was particularly impressive last season, scoring 25 goals in the Championship as the Bees missed out on a top six finish.

However, it won't be straightforward for Villa, with reports suggesting that fellow newly-promoted side Sheffield United want to sign the £15m-rated 22-year-old as well.

The Verdict

On paper this is a move that makes perfect sense and one that you can see happening.

Even though Villa have brought in Wesley for a club-record fee up top, they still need more goals and Maupay has shown that he is ready to make the step up.

Obviously, with Smith having worked with the player at Brentford before, he will know the qualities he has and what Maupay will add to the group.

In today's market, the £15m suggested fee isn't too expensive either, so you wouldn't be surprised to see this transfer go through before the deadline.
