Aston Villa midfielder John McGinn says that fans are yet to see the best of him, after helping the team win promotion to the Premier League.

The 24-year-old joined Villa from Scottish Premiership side Hibernian last summer and was one of the standout performers for Dean Smith's side.

McGinn scored seven goals and provided nine assists for his teammates in 44 appearances for Villa last season and won the club's player of the season award.

The midfielder produced a man-of-the-match performance against Derby County in the Championship play-off final at Wembley on Monday and scored the winner as Villa won promotion to the top flight after a three year absence.

McGinn is now looking forward to playing in the Premier League and believes Villa fans are yet to see the best of him.

“Sometimes in football you’ve got to take risks and you’ve got to challenge yourself,” said McGinn, as quoted by Teamtalk.

“Sometimes people had the perception I was just a runner, just a hard-working player; I think I am that, but I think I’ve got a lot more to my game.

“I think it had to take me coming down here to challenge myself against stronger, faster players to show that I can offer a lot more.

“I can always improve, I’ve still got a lot to learn – playing against the best players in the world is going to enhance that.

“I feel I’m different to everyone, so hopefully I can put that on show in the Premier League.”

Villa finished fifth in the Championship table, after a club-record ten-match winning run saw them cement their position in the top six and reached the play-off final with a penalty shoot-out victory over West Brom.

The Verdict:

McGinn was one of the standout performers for Villa in the Championship this season and I'm sure fans will be excited to see what he can do in the Premier League.

It's good that the player still feels that he has a lot to learn and he will no doubt have an important role to play for Villa in the top flight next season.
