Aston Villa are on the brink of completing the signing of towering goalkeeper Andre Moreira, according to The Mirror.

Moreira is set to sign for Aston Villa from Atletico Madrid on a season-long loan deal and provide competition for Jed Steer between the sticks.

The 22-year-old underwent a medical yesterday as he closes in on his switch to Villa Park.

Moreira has never played a game for La Liga giants Atletico Madrid since joining the club from Ribeirao in 2014 but he has had numerous loan spells.

The 6ft 5in stopper has spent time on loan at Moreirense, Uniao Madeira, Belenenses and Braga.

Now, Moreira is set for a temporary move to Villa Park, where he will become the first senior signing of the summer.

The former Portugal under-21 international will team up with Steve Bruce's men for the entirety of the 2018/19 season.

Aston Villa were hit with financial woes this summer, but these have been eased by the new takeover and now they are making their first addition.

The Verdict

Moreira is a promising young goalkeeper and it will be good to provide competition with Steer.

Both stoppers have big boots to fill because Sam Johnstone was so solid between the sticks over the past 18 months.

But a new signing is such a boost for Aston Villa and now they need to start building a promotion-winning squad.
