Aston Villa boss Dean Smith has certainly made a positive impact at his boyhood club as we head towards the New Year, with Villa firmly in contention for a top six finish.

They are currently 11th in the Championship table, five points adrift of the play-offs after they slipped to a disappointing 3-2 defeat to Leeds United on Sunday afternoon.

One major concern for Smith heading towards the January transfer window is his lack of defensive depth, with James Chester and Axel Tuanzebe being the only recognised centre-backs that the Villa boss has available to him.

This has prompted calls for Tommy Elphick to be recalled from his loan spell at Hull City in January, and Smith has revealed in a recent interview with Hull Daily Mail, that he could potentially return:

"Yes it's a possibility, but he's playing football until January, so I won't say anything on that until then."

Elphick has impressed for Nigel Adkins' side this season, with many predicting that they would be in the relegation zone by Christmas.

Yet, Elphick has played a crucial role in the Tigers being eight points clear of the bottom three, which will be pleasing for everyone associated with the club.

The 31-year-old central defender could certainly offer Smith a selection headache if he was to be recalled.

Birmingham Live understands that formal discussions have taken place between both parties involved, and Elphick could be set to return to Villa in January.

The Verdict

Elphick definitely has a part to play for Villa this season.

I was surprised to see Aston Villa loan him out in the first place, but given their lack of defensive options ahead of the New Year, Smith will surely see Elphick as an important player for their promotion bid.

He has a considerable amount of experience, and would be an excellent option to call upon when needed.
