Aston Villa striker Jonathan Kodjia could be offloaded this summer due to his high wages, according to The Mirror's Live Transfer Blog [Friday 8th June, 18:39].

Aston Villa are facing the prospect of losing a number of key players this summer amid financial uncertainty at the club.

After losing in the play-off final against Fulham, Villa are being hit hard by Financial Fair Play regulations and this has so far had Dr Tony Xia actively looking for a buyer, John Terry not signing a new contract, loan stars Robert Snodgrass and Sam Johnstone not returning on permanent deals and now others could be leaving.

Jack Grealish is a man attracting a lot of attention but Villa could also try to flog Kodjia.

The Ivory Coast international earns £35k-per-week and the Villains want to get those hefty wages off the books.

The 28-year-old scored 19 goals in his first season with Aston Villa but injuries affected his campaign in 2017/18 as he was limited to just 19 games, scoring once.

If Kodjia does depart this summer, Aston Villa could be forced to bring Gabby Agbonlahor back to the club after releasing him at the end of the season.

The Verdict

If Kodjia stays fit, he is so vitally important for Aston Villa's promotion chances.

But those wages are unrealistic to maintain at this level and selling him would be the easiest choice.

But after a season full of injuries and then a loss of form afterwards, are any clubs willing to take a punt on such a high-earner?
