Aston Villa set to receive timely cash boost, Xia will be delighted

Aston Villa are set to receive a windfall of around £1m from Ashley Westwood’s season with Burnley.

According to the Crewe Chronicle, Westwood has an appearance-based clause in his contract that has been triggered, which is set to hand Villa a cash boost this summer.

Westwood featured in 19 of Burnley’s 38 Premier League fixtures last season, helping Sean Dyche’s side into Europe.

Villa sold Westwood to Burnley, placing a clause in the deal stating that if he featured in half of their Premier League fixtures, they would receive further payment.

That clause has been triggered, with the Chronicle’s report indicating that Villa could be about to receive £1m, although 20% will be passed on to Crewe, where Westwood started his career.

Villa are currently preparing for a third consecutive year in the Sky Bet Championship, having failed to win promotion back to the Premier League last season.

Steve Bruce’s side finished fourth last year, but missed out on promotion by losing the play-off final.

Fulham beat Villa 1-0 at Wembley to secure a Premier League return.

The Verdict

This money, which should be around £800k, is going to be important for Villa and is a nice boost ahead of the summer.

Villa’s cash problems have been well documented, with their failure to win promotion potentially having huge consequences.

Dr Tony Xia will be delighted with the windfall from Westwood’s clause.
