Sherwood is keen on snapping up Holgate

The promising full-back made 22 appearances in all competitions for Barnsley last season and now is on the radar of Villa boss Tim Sherwood, who is looking to bring in a full-back to replace Matt Lowton who was sold to Burnley last month.

Sherwood is targeting players for the future and believes the 18-year-old, who can play at right-back as well as centre back, has the potential to become a top player.

He is prepared to offer the South Yorkshire side around £1million for Holgate but whether they are prepared to sell one of their promising talents is another question.

Whilst working at Tottenham Hotspur, Sherwood helped develop young players in the likes of Harry Kane and Ryan Mason and his nurturing of promising talent could be ideal for Holgate.
