Aston Villa set to complete transfer swoop for Coventry City man

Published

on

Coventry City are set to lose a talented youngster to Midlands counterparts Aston Villa as they have swooped for 16-year-old Thierry Katsukunya, per The Athletic.

The Premier League side will pay a six-figure compensation fee for the defender, who has been featuring for the Sky Blues’ under-18’s side this season.

The money that Villa are set to pay for Katsukunya has been described as ‘significant’ and it follows a trend of the club targeting their rivals in the area for their top youngsters.

Quiz: 30 questions about Coventry City’s best strikers from the last 5 years – Can you score 30/30?

1) How many goals has Viktor Gyokeres scored this season so far?

West Brom felt Villa’s pull in the summer when last year’s academy Player of the Season Tim Iroegbunam was snatched by the Villans and now Coventry are being raided.

The Sky Blues don’t currently have any academy talents in and around the first-team squad although attacking midfielder Wilson Bapaga is experiencing senior football with Grimsby Town of the National League.

Fans will not get to see Katsukunya in action though for the club as he looks set to seal a switch to the claret side of the Midlands in the near future.

The Verdict

It will have likely been a few years from when Katsukunya was ready for first-team football at the CBS Arena anyway, but it will still be a bitter blow for the club to lose a potential talent.

Not every youngster develops at the same pace and there’s every chance that at the end of his scholarship Katsukunya wouldn’t have made it, but he’s clearly highly thought of by Villa having watched him.

Mark Robins won’t be extremely worried by this development though – right now with Coventry sitting in fifth position in the Championship the only thing that will be on his mind is trying to secure his senior side a play-off place this season.

But it’s a good thing that the club are producing talents that are wanted by top level clubs – they’ll just be hoping to keep more of them than lose them in the future.
