According to The Mirror, Aston Villa are set to complete the signing of John Terry next week.

John Terry's contract with Premier League champions Chelsea expires at the end of this month and he will join Aston Villa on a free transfer.

Aston Villa have been desperate to add another centre back to their ranks this summer.

Steve Bruce is looking to provide competition for first choice duo Nathan Baker and James Chester as he prepares to let Micah Richards and Tommy Elphick leave the club.

Young centre back Kevin Toner will be sent out on loan again, meaning that John Terry can come in and fill that void.

Birmingham City were also interested in John Terry but it appears that he has chosen Aston Villa instead of their fierce local rivals.

The Villains have managed to flex their financial muscle and beat the Blues to Terry's signing by offering the 36-year-old a one-year deal worth £5m.

This deal also includes major bonuses if Terry can help Aston Villa win promotion to the top flight again.

The veteran defender wants to drop into the Championship rather than play against Chelsea next season.

After joining the Blues' academy from West Ham in 1995, the former England international went on to make over 700 appearances for Chelsea and won numerous titles including five Premier Leagues, the Europa League, the Champions League and five FA Cup titles.
